Short answers about what Prosemetry does, how to read its results, and what happens to your writing. For a full walk-through, see the User guide.

Getting started

What does Prosemetry do?

Prosemetry reads your document the way a careful reader would. It shows where your writing asks the most of readers, paragraph by paragraph, and what makes your writing yours. Then it helps you revise in your own words.

It describes your writing; it doesn’t grade it.

What can I upload?

A Word document (.docx). Word keeps headings, notes and bibliographies apart from the body of your text, so Prosemetry measures only your prose. Other formats mixed these together too often, so they’re turned off for now.

How long can my document be?

It depends on your plan: up to 1,000 words of body text on Free (no account needed, 3 analyses a day), 10,000 on Basic and 25,000 on Pro. Only the prose counts: title pages, headings, notes and bibliographies don’t. Your Account page shows your plan and how many analyses you have left.

At least 500 words gives the most useful results. The Writing Galaxy needs 750 words or more to place a document; shorter drafts get every other result.

Can I download the measurements for research?

Yes, on the Pro plan. Every value Prosemetry measures, for the whole document and paragraph by paragraph, downloads as an Excel workbook or a CSV file, ready for your own statistics. It’s built for linguistic researchers comparing writers, genres or drafts.

The measures cover sentence structure, word choice and predictability, cohesion between sentences and paragraphs, and reader effort. Quotations are left out of every measure, so the values describe the author’s own prose.

How long does an analysis take?

Usually under a minute; longer drafts take a little longer. A progress bar shows each step, and the results open when it finishes.

Does it work for any kind of writing?

Prosemetry recognises academic writing, stories and memoir, speeches, and general prose, and adjusts its notes to each. A long sentence is normal in a scholarly argument and worth a second look in a speech. If it guesses wrong, change the kind of writing at the top of the Workspace.

It reads English only for now.

Your results

Is a flagged pattern a mistake?

No. A pattern is something a reader may notice, not an error. A long sentence can suit a careful argument, and a surprising word can be exactly the right one.

For each passage you decide: keep it, revise it, or set it aside.

What is the Writing Galaxy?

A map of published writing grouped into families that read alike, such as “Direct and Personal” or “Technical and Precise”. It shows which family this document reads most like, and what sets it apart within that family.

It describes the document, not you. A different piece of your writing may sit somewhere else.

What does Reader Experience show?

Where readers work hardest as they move through your document, and why: long or tangled sentences, unexpected words, dense information, or weak links between ideas. It lists the passages to read again, starting with the hardest.

Are quotations counted?

No. Text you quote from someone else is left out of every measure, so the results describe your own writing.

Why do different pages count different numbers of things?

Each analysis looks for something different. Reader Experience measures effort across the whole draft; the Workspace checks each paragraph for specific patterns. A paragraph can stand out in one and not the other, and both can be right.

Why does an older analysis say it was “measured before” an improvement?

Prosemetry’s measures keep improving. A saved analysis keeps the results it was made with, so it never changes under you. Choose Run it again to see the same draft with today’s measures; the old analysis stays as it is.

Revising

Will Prosemetry rewrite my sentences?

No. Prosemetry never rewrites your words or suggests replacement text. Each note shows what a reader may notice, a move to try, and a question to help you decide. You do the rewriting, so the result still sounds like you.

How does the Workspace work?

The Workspace is your document with notes in the margin. Click a paragraph to edit it and see its note. Your revision priorities list the paragraphs most worth your time first.

  • Check my revision compares your new version with the original and tells you whether it still sounds like you.
  • Record a decision for each paragraph: accept your revision, keep the original, still editing, or decide later.
  • Paragraph breaks stay fixed so every note stays tied to its passage. Shift+Enter adds a line break inside a paragraph.
Does it check spelling and grammar?

Spelling is checked as you type, with the usual underline and a suggested correction. Grammar checking is coming soon.

How do I see whether my revision helped?

Save your document and choose Analyze as Draft 2 (the button always names the next draft). Prosemetry analyzes your edits as a new draft and keeps the old one, and Compare shows them side by side. At the end of Compare you can revise again or finish and download your final draft.

Can I take my work with me?

Yes. From the Workspace, export your revised draft as a Word document or plain text, or a revision report with your decisions and notes. From your results, you can open the Complete Analysis Report (print it or save it as a PDF) and download every measurement as a spreadsheet.

Accounts and privacy

Do I need an account?

No. Without one, your analyses are saved in the browser you used. Create an account to keep them and open them on any device; analyses you started in that browser move into your account.

Who can see my writing?

Only you. Each analysis opens only for the account, or the browser, that created it.

Is my draft sent to an AI service?

No. Prosemetry runs its own measures and language models on its own server, and spelling is checked there too. Your document isn’t sent to an outside AI service, and it isn’t used to train Prosemetry’s models.

Can I delete an analysis?

Yes. On My analyses, choose Delete beside any analysis. Results are also removed on a schedule: after a day on Free or without an account, a week after each draft is made on Basic, and 30 days on Pro. You can delete your whole account from your Account page.
